Saw the dentist this afternoon. He repacked two of the extraction sites with absorbable packing dipped in some foul-tasting medicine with amazing topical numbing action. The rearmost extraction site is indeed infected, meriting a prescription for Keflex and a warning to stop taking it immediately if I have an adverse reaction. (Keflex may cause reactions in people allergic to cephalosporins or penicillin.)

Meanwhile, Laurel's school was visited by Molar Man today, so I've been hearing all about him, his girlfriend Ginger Vitis, his nemesis Bacteria Boy and the rest of their crew. Dental programs were never that, um, mascot-y? mascoted? when I was her age. (:

The kindergarten classes are visited on the 100th day of school by Zero the Hero... *thinks* and last year someone wore a Clifford the Big Red Dog costume during book fair week.

I think abstinence-only education nullifies our chances of STD mascots. At least there's always Parasite Pals.

The foul-tasting medicine is probably clove-based - that's what I got packed into my dry socket. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_of_cloves I spent quite a while trying to figure out what that vaguely familiar taste was! :)

We have Brusher Bailey as our mascot, with his little dog Sebastian. They fight the plaquies: Eike and Prevo

Recently we added to the cast of characters.

Ginger Vitis is a villainess, and Brusher's new sidekick / romantic interest is Hygiene Hanna.

It makes sense to me in a dental context that a character named after gingivitis would be a villain, not a hero...

In my current state of abysmallness (yes, not a word, but it is today), this cracked me up SO MUCH for some reason.

I will never meet another gal named Ginger, ever, without thinking of this and hopefully not chuckling in her face.

I kept snickering at the same Ginger because it made me think of the term "ginger kids". (I did not pass that tidbit on to Laurel.)

I started feeling better as soon as the stuff on the pack kicked in! I'm just dopey today because I didn't sleep well last night. I did, however, find an adorable backing print for the class quilt I have to finish this week -- on the dollar/yard table! I picked up some "quilting solids" to supplement what I've already got and make binding, so now I just have to decide whether to make rails or nine-patch blocks to fill around the handprint duck blocks. It's going to end up so stupidly cute /I'll/ be bidding on it at the silent auction!

Wow, you're productive! Indeed, you are feeling better. :D Make sure to take some pictures of your quilt and post them, at least to flickr.

Have you ever made fondant?

Have you ever stacked a wedding cake? I don't mean with visible columns between the tiers, just the tiers one on top of another. I am using 3" deep pans, each cake sliced in half so each tier is four layers and 6 inches tall. Sorry, not good at explaining this! It will be a three tier cake. I understand from some books and online searches, that you are to put dowels shoved down into the cake and then put the layer on top - the dowels support it instead of the cake, really. I get this for the bottom layer...but what about the top one? The dowels shoved into the second layer to support the top one would have to be lined up with the dowels shoved into the first layer, right? I am so afraid of shifting and other nonsense, especially since each tier has four layers with filling in between.

I am a great baker, and I know it will taste good and I'm great at piping, etc.... I've just never made fondant (I've used store bought, but I don't think it tastes very fresh), and I am scared of having a leaning tower of Pisa cake!

Any experience or advice?

I am so excited about the handprint quilt thing I need to make myself sit still and press all the strip-pieced seams open! (And that sounds filthy typed out, hee.) There's a circus animal-themed idea in one of the books I might sweet-talk Laurel into using her hands to print because I have a reproduction circus panel I'm itching to use. Mom originally bought the panel for a border print, but mitering the corners together proved too frustrating so I took the whole kit and caboodle with plans to use the border print on a gored skirt for me. I'm learning to spot the good parts of printed panels I keep finding on the sale table. (The circus panel actually came from a quilt shop, but that's another story.)

I've never made my own fondant, but I have bought freshly-made fondant from a local supplier. I find it easier to tint, although that's probably an imaginary bias.

For stacking tiers without space between, I cut dowels to the height of each finished tier and use a cake board (foam-core board) on top of the dowels and underneath the tier above. If you can assemble the cake on site, have each tier on its corresponding size cake board with dowels in the lower tiers, then set them up in their finale place and pipe to fill in the seams between tiers.

oh - i'd love to see that on a gored skirt!

and of course.......duh, cake boards. i swear i am not as stupid as i am appearing lately. just a little overwhelmed, and the synapses aren't firing.

I am inspired by the beautiful skirts I've seen made with border prints.

When you're multitasking in many directions, things you know don't always come to mind. One time I called my mother while freaking out about cooking for a potluck. Once she reminded me that she uses a large star tip for filling deviled eggs, I felt kinda ditzy but relieved she was able to answer my Burning Question so easily.

pressed post too soon! there are a couple of ginger kids that live on my street. they are so red and their skin is soooo translucent, they almost look like another breed. beautiful, just...almost odd.

did you read that article recently about the probability of redheads becoming extinct?

When Vogon read the article about the possible extinction of redheads, he suggested we start making babies! (His natural haircolor is auburn.) I don't think I have any redhead recessive genes on my side, though.
