I come from a family of crafters, so it's only natural that they're having a quilter's challenge. When she found out she would just have to e-mail a picture of the finished piece to the relative organizing it instead of sending the finished piece off by postal mail, she called me to walk her through attaching image files to an e-mail message.

I almost choked at downloading 6MB for five photos, but the finished piece is so cool I decided to share a slightly edited copy of her photo of the full quilt with you. (It's been sized down and I replaced the original background with clouds.) And the puppies, because revme loves to see photos of them. Heh.

Mom's challenge quilt: "And A Yard of This One", pattern from When Quilters Gather: 20 Patterns of Piecers at Play. I'm pretty sure that plaid print at the bottom used to be a skirt I had in middle school. Photo taken by Barbara Gutierrez, 12 January 2006.

Fresh from the groomers, it's Daisy and Holly! Note that Daisy let the groomers trim her face so she doesn't have the shaggy face she did when we visited in December. Photo taken by Sarah Gutierrez, 6 January 2006.

I think the hardest part about quilting is following through to finish one. One of my aunts enjoys piecing (assembling) quilt tops but runs out of steam for the actual quilting and finishing, so when another aunt bought a quilting machine[1], a lot of quilt tops that had been languishing for years got finished.

Laurel loves the puppies! She learned how to tell them apart the first night she met them and wanted to roll around on the ground with them every chance she got. I was amazed at how close they got to her, too -- when she was sick on Christmas Eve, the dogs would whine just before Laurel would fuss that she was about to puke. Now she asks to talk to them on the phone and every time we go by pet toys in a store, she wants to get some to send to them. (:

1. A quilting machine is basically a giant scrolling frame that holds the quilt and a long-arm sewing machine that can be easily moved in different directions. Because the quilt is on the frame and can be scrolled back and forth, quilting the layers together is *much* easier and faster than doing the same work by hand or on a regular sewing machine. They're much more expensive than sewing machines, though -- a basic sewing machine costs around $150 and a basic quilting machine starts around $5,000.

And those puppies are adorable!

The book the pattern is from is full of cool quilting-people designs! We were joking about making one with a rotary cutter for my uncle, who had to get a few stitches in his hand after a rotary-cutting accident in December.

I thought you'd like a new picture of the puppies. I think Daisy looks much more dignified with a well-trimmed face. Laurel keeps talking about visiting "her" dogs in Colorado, but her spring break is a different week from my family's so we'd be on our own during the day and I'd rather visit in the summer anyway.

I am really proud of Mom because we both have a tendency to start a lot of projects and only finish a few of them.

I'm excited that my mom is stepping so boldly into pictorial quilting.

I love the puppies. I'm usually more of a cat person, but Holly and Daisy are pretty sharp and love the crap out of my kid, so they have a soft spot in my heart.

Mom's trying to pull me into the lure of quilting, but I am resisting. Sort of. Vogon keeps showing me baby quilt pattern books and a rubber duckie pattern in one of them keeps stalking around the back of my head like the Burger King guy in the commercials, except less weird.

I love the puppies! Their breath leaves something to be desired but Laurel loves them so much she asks to call them on the phone. Hee.

I'm so excited that my mom is starting to take photos of her work so Laurel can see them here!

My dad included the picture of the puppies with the quilt photos. I'm pretty sure it was intentional. (:

I wanted to take the entire pattern book home with us. So did Laurel.

Every wire fox terrier I've met has a cute nose like theirs!

Which kitty is that in your userpic?
