While looking for a quote that Vogon couldn't remember the exact wording of about BASIC, I chuckled at this excerpt from a Google search result:

"What part does it play in deciding what should happen to a brain-damaged person? ... May we contact you with information about NPR programming?"

(I find that rather amusing since we're in the middle of a begathon pledge drive.)

Anyway, I think the quote he was looking for is from Edsger Dijkstra's How do we tell truths that might hurt? (1975):

"It is practically impossible to teach good programming to students that have had a prior exposure to BASIC: as potential programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration."

Similar thoughts have been expressed about FORTRAN, though I would very much beg to differ in that case (especially as they were expressed by the egregious Ed Yourdan).
