[sticky post] Terry Lee Mathews, 1974-2013

Rainbow
Terry MathewsThis is a sticky entry (i.e., it will always be shown as the top entry on my latest entries page) about Terry Lee Mathews, known on LiveJournal as mountain_hiker. Terry passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was a 1993 graduate of Widefield High School and a 1999 graduate of University of Colorado at Colorado Springs with a bachelor's in Geography. An avid mountaineer and photographer, he is survived by his parents, Louis and Yong Chi (Nancy); a brother, Tom; three nieces and a nephew; his cats, Luna and Menchi; and numerous friends. Terry's ashes will be scattered in the mountains he loved so much.

A celebration of life was held Saturday, July 27th at Garden of the Gods. Mark Hayes Photography covered the memorial event; online galleries are available on Facebook and on his website, where you may purchase prints. He also wrote a blog post about the event.

Terry's ashes were taken to the summit of Crestone Needle in August. Britt Jones made a video from that trip; it's viewable at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fk1lGUmrPvs

There is a a memorial page for Terry on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Memorial-To-Terry-Lee-Mathews/221868637964121

Please do. I figured it's easiest to have a sticky entry for the most updated information.

I'm in southern California and won't be able to make the ceremony. If you could, please relay my deepest, most heartfelt condolences to Terry's family. Thank you.

I have made arrangements with a professional photographer to cover the service. There will be an online gallery afterward.

I am able to host any/all photos you or friends and family want on my photo gallery. Terry would get his own album and it could be set to public or password protected. http://lylith.com/zen/ Just an option if wanted or needed.

Thank you for the offer. Hosting is part of the package from the photographer so that's set. If someone wants to purchase a full set of digital files, I can ask about mirroring or hosting elsewhere. (I may later since Terry's dad has mentioned wanting to make a printed memory book.)

Since I can't access LJ from work and have very little internet access at home, and my LJ is practically innactive, it's been months since I last logged in. This morning I was thinking about writing on my LJ to speak about my recent engagement with political activism and human rights. I thought of writing on LJ because he was basically the only active member on my friends list and I thought he would like to read about it.

Then this. I feel so sad because he was such a smart, funny and generous man, a great friend, an excellent human being. I still have a happy holidays card he sent me once - he signed "Terry Mathews - [_|_]". He is gonna be missed, because people like him are so very rare... and so very needed.

I want to thank you, both for calling the CSPD and for telling us of Terry's passing. I've known him for 12 years online so I don't know what to say.

I was talking to him in my journal comments on the 10th about a game we both liked, Shining Force 3. I can't believe that he's gone.

I'd like to know that his cats are being cared for, since he thought a lot of them. Do you know who's taking care of them?

I've been at a loss for what to say too. Since I'm geographically close enough to help a bit, I booked a photographer for the memorial service (a gallery will be up soon afterward for people that couldn't attend) and I'll be cooking at base camp when his ashes are taken up into the mountains in August by an impressive group of fellow mountaineers.

I exchanged texts with him the day before he passed away. It's surreal.

I believe that his best friends, who he asked to take care of things after his passing, are caring for the cats. They live in the same neighborhood so I think the cats only had a minimal distance to move.

I just found out about this yesterday.

This is just terrible, absolutely terrible.

Last I knew things were getting so much better for him. He and I have talked about depression several times. He knew I would always talk if he needed someone.

The world has lost a good person.

I thought you were on someone's list to notify and just... didn't know. I'm sorry.

I know it's been years since we last saw one another, but if you want my cell phone number, drop me an e-mail (oddharmonic at gmail.com) and I'll send it your way.
