"I'll have to take those fireworks."

In May 2003, Himself and I bought the better part of a car trunkful of fireworks from the numerous stands along I-70 in Missouri on the long drive back to North Carolina. We set off most of them that Fourth of July (post) and brought the remainder with us when we moved back to Colorado, where they've been in storage ever since.

I assumed that Himself had taken the best of the remaining fireworks with him when he moved last year, so I gave my brother the green light to play with whatever was left in storage. He was setting them off with a few friends at my parents earlier today while Laurel was on the phone with Mom.

The call seemed to abruptly end, which isn't unusual with Laurel, so I didn't think anything of it until Mom called back about twenty minutes after their call ended to let me know she had let Laurel go when our friendly local sheriff's deputy pulled into the driveway. He gave the guys the rundown -- if it leaves the ground or explodes, it's illegal -- and confiscated some of the stuff they had before wishing them a happy and safe holiday.

Considering that Himself's plan was to "blow [things] up until [we] run out or the police arrive" as the photo post says - I'd say it was one of his more rational purchases, having lasted two years before the police arrived. ;)

It's certainly been one of the most widely enjoyed purchases he's made.

Laurel asked last night if we could have some "birthday fireworks". I was confused since I thought she meant going to a fireworks show, but it turned out she meant sparklers.

They have been for as long as I can remember!

The only times I remember not seeing police come by for fireworks were in Indian Hills -- setting off a bunch of stuff we'd bought in Wyoming one year and the Fourth of July celebration at the Mosbys.

We got a good run out of a relatively small investment in fireworks.

I don't mind the police confiscating fireworks in Colorado because the fire danger is usually high this time of year.
