I saw the dentist this morning and, as expected, my molar is abscessed. I'm on a week's course of clindamycin (penicillin is usually the first choice, but I'm allergic to it) and I have an appointment for next Thursday for either extraction or a root canal with a crown afterward. I'm open to your input either way.

In other health news, Laurel and I should have health insurance shortly. It includes no-cost immunizations to age 6, so she'll be squared away there for school.

...

On a totally unrelated note, I've been seeing ads for Furryville toys lately. They remind me of someone mentioning awhile back that she had a dollhouse populated with little stuffed mice. Laurel wants the Pigbys in the Kitchen, which makes me do a double-take every time I hear "the Pigbys are all bakin'" in the ad. *ahem*

I saw those last night at Target, and they remind me of a toy I had as a little girl - mine were furry bears, not mice ;)

Personally, if the tooth is far back enough that you won't notice it when you smile, etc - an extraction is MUCH less painful than a root canal.

I think the mice were a little before my time; one of my older cousins had a family of them. I had little bears and rabbits from Mapletown, which a cartoon version of aired on Nickelodeon in the late 1980s.

The abscessed molar is the third one back counting from the front of my mouth, so it wouldn't be noticeable if I had it extracted. The dentist's concern was that the surrounding teeth may drift over time, affecting my bite. (This isn't as much of a concern to me since I'm already used to having an underbite.) I had a root canal when I was 8 and it wasn't that bad, but it never had a crown put on it. Hmm, I just realized the root canal I had is also on my third molar back, only on the other side of my lower jaw. Weird.

My mom had a root canal on two of her abcessed teeth and ended up losing them anyway. The next one is near the front and would show when she smiled so she's going to try the root canal on this one also - next week. Hopefully this one takes.

Asia has had 4 root canals when she was 3 and recently had to have one of them pulled because it got abcessed. There just doesn't seem to be any guarantees.

I had a root canal when I was 8 and I haven't had a problem with it since aside from some of the tooth around it chipping.

I'm leaning toward having it extracted because this is the third or fourth time in the past year that it's abscessed (although this time is definitely the worst) and I just want it gone.

I'm glad you got to go to the dentist! I was hoping your pain was easing up some!
